This paper reports on a study undertaken to develop a continuous nano-layer of sintering aid on the surface of Si(3)N(4) and SiC particles using forced hydrolysis in the presence of urea in an aqueous solution of yttrium and aluminium nitrates. The morphological characteristics of coated particles are examined using scanning (SEM), transmission (TEM), and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Possible mechanisms for the formation of the coatings are discussed. Microscopic examination revealed an in-situ composite microstructure.
