Metallurgical sample preparation at the Institute of Reference Materials and Measurements
This paper describes the metallurgical facilities available at the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements. The target preparation facility was established as a support activity for the 150 MeV electron linear accelerator and the Van de Graaff accelerators at the Institute. The facility also provides nuclear targets and other samples to universities, nuclear centres and industry world-wide. The paper covers the techniques used for the preparation of small quantities of alloy, sample fabrication, manipulation techniques and encapsulation methods. A number of analytical techiques for sample characterisation and quality control are also discussed.
