Assessment of remobilization potential of Cu, Cr, Ni and Pb in the sediments of Pallanza Bay (Lake Maggiore)
This paper presents an assessment of the remobilisation potential of metal contaminants in Lake Maggiore. The mobility assessment procedure consists of the determination of the metal concentrations bound to the different sediment components. The European procedure for sequential metal fractionation was applied to the analysis of sediment cores taken from 13 stations in the Pallanza basin. The procedure discriminates metals which are: (i) bound to particle surfaces and to carbonates; (ii) bound to organic matter; (iii) bound to iron compounds; (iv) bound to silicates and refractory minerals. The results are presented for each sediment horizon in the form of distribution patterns.
