This paper investigates the symmetry of metal surface states using group theory methods. The surface states are represented using the linear combination of atomic orbitals approximation. This yields a qualitative characterisation of surface states with respect to many parameters including orbital composition, charge distribution and nodal planes. Symmetry selection rules are derived and examples are given where erroneous assignments and ambiguities in literature could be clarified by the present method.
