Hydropower plant at the Ars and Garbet riversFunded under: ENG-THERMIE 1
The aim of the project is to optimise the electric energy production of a site with two rivers of equal importance. The optimisation includes a water intake on each river, balanced to have the same pressure head (equal to 319 m). A system of valves is included on both pressure pipes which allows remote control operation of either one or both turbines, depending on the flow, optimising the output of the alternators and consequently of the whole station. After several minor difficulties and the incorporation of modifications required to equalise the pressures when the flows are changing on both high heads, the system worked well, allowing the station to function according to the objectives of the project during lower flows. Special attention was given to the two water intakes with flat gates on the underside. The design gives protection to small trout, with two channels, one for fish heading upstream and one for young fish heading downstream.
