This paper compares a number of methods for estimating the thermal resistance of a homogeneous plane building element from performance data. It is shown that all methods are based on models that can be derived from a solution of the heat conduction equation. Applications of the methods to both simulated and real data show that the so-called average method is inferior to all the other methods that take into account the dynamics of the heat flow through a building component.
