TREES ERS-1 Study '94 : Assessment of the usefulness and relevance of ERS-1 for trees
This paper gives an assessment of the usefulness of ERS-1 SAR data for tropical forest studies under various ecological and environmental conditions and on a global scale. Various analytical procedures are investigated such as speckle filtering, texture analysis, segmentation, classification, terrain geocoding, interferometry and backscattering modelling. A total of 21 study areas along the topical belt were selected, representing different conditions in terms of forest ecology, density, deforestation states and terrain characteristics. Preliminary results are presented for each study area.
