Does a natural magnetic belt surround tokamak plasmas?
This paper demonstrates that many observations in the L regime of TFTR (Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor), DIII-D, TEXTOR, ASDEX and CCT can be explained by postulating that a natural magnetic island belt links the confined plasma edge layer to the scrape-off layer. It also indicates that a transition to a higher confinement mode should occur at a sufficiently high heating power level and suggests a way of controlling particle exhaust.
