Abstract

The aim of this project was to gain a fundamental knowledge of the behaviour of zinc and lead in the production of pig iron and steel and thus to contribute towards solving the problems of recovery and/or disposal of these heavy metals. The first subjects of the investigation were the solubility of zinc and lead in the iron melts, the way in which the alloy elements affect the solubility, and the distribution of the equilibria of the zinc and lead between the slags and the iron melts. Next, the evaporation of zinc and lead from iron melts was studied. The effect of argon pressure in the furnace atmosphere on evaporation rate was also determined and the evaporation mechanism explained with the help of the theoretical models. Finally, the evaporation of zinc and lead in the ArO(2) atmosphere with controlled gas flow was investigated. The reaction mechanism of the subsequent oxidation and condensation, which caused dust to form, is discussed in the light of the experimental results.
