Most of the laboratories in the European steel industry are equipped with multichannel ICP spectrometers. The aim of this research is to improve the performance of this technique by applying the FIA (flow injection analysis) concept. In its simplest form, the FIA sample is injected into a reagent flux. Using FIA with ICP spectrometry makes it possible, by discontinuous injection, to perform multielemental analysis of solutions with high salt content without clogging the nebuliser; to achieve this a special valve is connected between the nebuliser and the peristaltic pump. This technique is of particular interest for the multielemental analysis of various baths used in the treatment of sheet steel. It also increases the sensitivity of the analysis of many elements in steel. To achieve these results, it is necessary not only to modify the method of solution but also also to optimise the measurement and injection parameters. The reliability of the method can be enhanced by automating it.
