Chemistry and environment : Legislation, methodologies and applications
Rigorous evaluation of the relationship between economy and environment suggests a positive feedback between social benefits (public health, education, technology) and economic development. In this context a course was organised at the Joint Research Centre, Ispra, to introduce specialists to environmental issues. The course was intended to supplement formal training in chemistry disciplines, and to raise awareness of socio-economic issues. It covered the following topics: (i) environmental protection regulations; (ii) socio-cultural factors influencing environmental policy; (iii) scientific tools to support the environmental management; (iv) pollution dispersion processes; (v) analytical chemistry aspects; (vi) protection and management of water resources; (vii) hazardous waste treatments.
