Plasticity problems during continuous castingFunded under: ECSC-STEELRES 8C
This research project examined problems of plasticity encountered during continuous casting operations. Research was mainly directed at modifications to corner radii and mould tapers of the normal 155 mm-square and 185 mm-square mould sizes. No significant improvements in as-cast billet or end-product quality were observed due to new corner radii values. Further research on mould taper values did not produce any improvement in results for the range tested. Mould monitoring has shown that mould displacements do not follow instantaneous temperature variations due to the large distance between sensors and thermocouples. In general, the temperatures obtained with mould powders are essentially similar to those reported when using oil lubrication.
