This paper describes two documents which were produced in order to present the science of manual handling in a simple form and to point to ways of reducing manual handling risk. The first, Guidelines for manual handling in the mining industry, was produced to provide practical guidance on small changes to equipment or practice which can be implemented locally. Its sister document, Guidelines for manual handling in the steel industry, covers the same areas, but target weights quoted are lower and all the ideas are designed specifically to relate to tasks or operations carried out in steel plants.
