This article focuses on projects which have been brought together to produce guidelines on the ergonomics of underground illumination in coalmines. The general philosophy, objectives and benefits of ergonomics in relation to lighting are described. The general conclusions are discussed under the following headings: (i) ergonomically acceptable lighting levels; (ii) factors to be considered in defining additional lighting requirements; (iii) major sources of additional lighting; (iv) signalling.
