Abstract

This document presents the guidelines on the ergonomics of underground illumination in coal mines. The guidelines deal with the ergonomic considerations covering the relationship between the worker, his task and the lighting provision, in terms of both safety and performance. They are intended to supplement the specialist engineering skills of lighting and electrical engineers in designing improved lighting installations. The general philosophy, objectives and benefits of ergonomics in relation to lighting are explained. Specific guidelines and examples of how the general objectives can be achieved are presented, classified by area of the mine.
