This report contains material presented and discussed at the workshop on the subject of fish farm effluents and their control in countries of the European Union, held in Hamburg, Germany in November 1992. The workshop addressed key problem areas relating to the need to harmonise the regulatory efforts in member states and the need to standardise recommended control procedures. Topics discussed included: (i) the environmental loading and ecological effects of aquaculture effluents; (ii) approaches which could be employed to minimise the output of waste and its impact on the environment; (iii) the role played by effective site selection and resource allocation.
