In 1990, an European Concerted Action in Air Pollution Epidemiology was established. The main objective is to improve the quality and effectiveness of epidemiological research on atmospheric pollution and health through European cooperation. Technical objective of the action are: raising and unifying the standards of study designs, measurement techniques and data analysis methodologies, creating an European (including Central and Eastern Europe) network of experts in air pollution epidemiology, initiating cross-European multicentre studies in air pollution epidemiology, identifying and addressing air pollution problems specific to some European regions, and encouraging the utilization of the unique opportunities of East-West European study comparisons, and possibilities for semi-experimental studies in Central and Eastern Europe. Working groups are established by the Commission on the advice of the Steering Committee to implement specific tasks. These groups meet at workshops etc to produce Air Pollution Epidemiology Research Reports. In addition, regional aspects of air pollution are treated in special scientific symposia. This report is the product of the third regional meeting organized under the concerted action.
