This document aims to explain the mechanisms and impacts of ozone depletion, particularly the effects of UV radiation, and to describe how ozone depletion is being countered both by international cooperation on legislation to prevent it and by research aimed at increasing understanding of the causes. The research programmes concerned are outlined and details of the EASOE campaign are provided. Policy initiatives are discussed with particular emphasis on the Montreal protocol.
