Abstract

Expert evaluations of navigation and route guidance systems were conducted and the results were analysed using the HARDIE general guidelines framework. Specific comments are provided on design aspects identified for the various systems. Those identified as good human factors will be incorporated into the design guidelines for navigation and route guidance systems. For human factors experts are unsure as to best practice due to the lack of empirical evidence. The main areas where questions exist are: (i) choice and design of information presentation mode; (ii) optimum timing of presentation; (iii) orientation timing and harmonisation of vehicle and road information; (iv) driver/system interaction. The main questions within these areas will be prioritised according to their safety critical nature as part of the planning/scoping of the experimental work within HARDIE.
