The location-reference system used by the SOCRATES pilot projects is defined and requirements for SOCRATES type applications are specified. The standard location reference number (SLRN) proposal introduces an additional 8 bit feature reference and defines an area grouping of the location reference to the definition of ALERT C. The SLRN consists of 4 elements: EBU country code, database number, TMC problem location code (location reference) and SOCRATES extension (feature reference). To exchange digital maps between their producers, in-vehicle system producers and traffic control centres the representation of the SLRN in GDF 2.1 format is defined. The SLRN was presented to CEN TC 278 to be standardised together with ALERT C. A European pre-standard (ENV) is envisaged until the end of 1993. In order to achieve international consensus on location reference the SLRN proposal is based on the results of the workshop on location referencing held at the Ford Motor Company Limited on 26-27 April 1993.
