Abstract

This report examines the relationship between age-related deterioration in sensory, cognitive and physical abilities and the ability to drive safely. Subjects covered include the decline with age in static and dynamic visual acuity, attentional skills and perception. The concept of risk and risk perception is considered. The actual driving behaviour of older drivers is then considered, particularly in relation to road traffic situations that elderly drivers find difficult and which they try to avoid. Data is also provided on the types and ages of private cars owned by elderly people.
