A standard data model for public transport has many advantages for users (i.e. the PT companies) and the suppliers of EDP systems who support the planning and control of public transport operations. It opens the market for the PT companies which can combine software modules by different producers, and it serves as a reliable basis for developers, reflecting the standardised requirements of users who may be interested in buying a new software system for a particular application. The project EUROBUS is in the process of defining such a common data model based on a generic functional model derived from the former ÖPNV and CASSIOPE approaches. EUROBUS aims to develop a conceptual data model and produce the derived but not optimised logical level. The first results are now available and have been submitted by ERTICO to CEN TC 278 WG 3 which in its meeting of 25 May 1993 in Munich adopted the conceptual data model for European standardisation.
