Collection and pre-processing of NOAA-AVHRR 1 km resolution data for tropical forest resource assessment
The main objective of this document is to describe the procedures and specifications for the collection and pre-processing of a large advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) standard HRPT archive request product (SHARP), high resolution picture transmission (HRPT) or local area coverage (LAC) data set for global tropical forest resource assessment. The collection and pre-processing of the data has been specified with the major objectives of : the compilation of an inventory of closed forest, fragmented forest and nonforest; the monitoring of changes within forest areas and at forest/nonforest boundaries; the investigation of forest seasonality. These notes: first identify the data sources and report on their current and future status; then list the criteria for examining the existing archives and selecting appropriate imagery; and finally present the specifications for pre-processing. It is hoped that these notes will be of use to all the groups planning to utilize the TREES project data and results, and will also be of interest to other groups planning similar data acquisition and pre-processing campaigns.
