Abstract

The carrying behaviour of steel columns embedded in concrete foundations was analysed in detail by experimental tests. By deformation and elongation measurements during 36 tests, the behaviour was documented at the elastic, plastic and at the ultimate limit state. Furthermore a simplified, mechanical model was elaborated. Usual hot rolled sections were checked, as these are predominantly used in practice in this type of construction. The complete research programme leads to the development of a realistic design concept. The proposal of a design concept contains relevant improvements compared to the existing design codes. The main advantage consists of the fact that the lengths of embedment (loe) of the steel columns and the corresponding concrete masses can be considerably reduced.
