The IRMM laboratory for the preparation of biological and environmental reference materials is discussed in terms of its ability to satisfy important parameters for the preparation of candidate reference materials. This paper emphasises the need for automation and the importance of quality control. The choice of transformation methods and their possible influences on quality and long-term conservation are also considered.
