Abstract

This paper presents the results of a theoretical study for the interpretation of the optical and magneto-optical spectra of PrSb. In particular the question of the assignment of the unexpectedly low optical and magneto-optical signals to the f(2) to f(1)d transition is addressed. Two different approaches are used: the crystal field approach, suitable for the localised Pr 4f states, and the band approach for the conduction electrons polarised by the 4f states. The two pictures are merged by the technique of a fixed 4f spin moment used to perform the spin-polarised calculations for the conducting electrons. On the basis of the model it is found that the wear intensity of the optical and magneto-optical signal can be credited essentially to electric dipole selection rules among crystal field states.
