  • The ion velocity (Bohm-Chodura) boundary condition at the entrance to the magnetic pre-sheath in the presence of diamagnetic and ExB drifts in the scrape-off layer

Abstract

In the absence of drifting, the Bohm-Chodura criterion requires that the fluid velocity parallel to the magnetic field reaches the ion acoustic velocity at the entrance to the magnetic pre-sheath. Changes to this criterion are derived for the case of poloidal ExB drifts in the scrape-off layer. The parallel fluid velocity may then become supersonic, subsonic or reversed.
