Abstract

Recently the nuclear industry has developed a theoretical approach to predict the behaviour of cracks in complex situations such as those involving non-symmetrical loading, combined thermal and mechanical loading, and three dimensional configurations. This is termed the local approach to fracture. The purpose of the work presented was to examine the difficulties which arise when applying this approach to the fracture of steels in cleavage and ductile fracture modes. The project included both a numerical intercomparison, involving the simulation of the tensile loading of a notched round bar, and two experimental intercomparisons using steels with different fracture characteristics.
