Studies in health technology and informatics : Volume 20 : Telematics in primary care in Europe
In all member states of the EU, increasing pressure on the limited resources for health care has lead to greater emphasis on cost effectiveness and to a shift from hospital care to primary health care. Moreover, increasing mobility of inhabitants requires a European effort towards standardisation. The book identifies how the applications of telematics to general practice, in the framework of primary health care, can improve the quality of health care in Europe. The scope of the research presented in this volume covers: (i) the state of the art of telematics in primary health care, focusing on the need of the general practitioner for horizontal and vertical data transmission and support; (ii) the contextual basis for the development of telematics in primary health care with regard to ethical, social and organisational impact and consumer perspective; (iii) the areas where telematics may be further developed to meet the common needs of general practitioners in Europe.
