Abstract

An experimental project started to study the rim structure and the irradiation is now proceeding in the HBWR. The maximum burnup is 100 MWd/kgU by highly enriched fuel discs. The fuel temperature is kept constant, ranging from 600 to 1200 C, during irradiation by gas flow rig. Numerical analyses of the rig were made and confirmed that the rig design could provide the target conditions. In post-irradiation examinations the thresholds of the rim structure formation will be identified, and the material properties and characteristics of the rim structure will be investigated. The data will enable fuel performance at high burnup to be evaluated.
