This series of slides explores the characteristics, use and development of land use and land cover assessments for sustainable resource management. It identifies necessary approaches for dealing with the complex geometry of changing landscapes, and assesses data sets currently available. Classification schemes are discussed and the characteristics of a core data set proposed. The important role of remote sensing techniques in this context is also considered.
