Abstract

This paper presents the calculations leading to the power absorption formulae used in the study of possible destabilisation of Alfvén modes by high energy ions. The drift kinetic equation (DKE) for a hot plasma in axisymmetric equilibria is first solved to obtain a stationary distribution function, using a local Maxwellian distribution for electrons and bulk ions. The total power exchanged between the particles and the perturbing EM fields can then be calculated. The resulting expressions are implemented in the LION code.
