This paper describes the results obtained with the B2-EIRENE code package for two specific ITER divertor configurations (V-shape and gas bag) and gives an outline of the design, properties and physics basis of an improved ASDEX Upgrade divertor. An assessment of the relative merits of different divertor schemes requires elaborate numerical models and codes, which can treat all the atomic physics processes as well as the complicated geometries involved. These must be sufficiently validated against running experiments such as ASDEX Upgrade over a relevant range of parameters.
