  • Stowing of the gob and other disused underworkings with light ash and other fine-grained waste products conveyed hydraulically from the surface

The working of coal deposits and the concomitant spoil heaps and sludge settlement ponds inevitably impinge upon the natural environment. In developing a technique for gob stowing, the aim has been to find a means of feeding more of the waste from mining operations back into the mine workings. As a sequel to work undertaken from 1985 to 1987, and in accordance with tasks and goals set more recently, the current project addresses problems encountered in the production of hydraulically conveyable suspensions treated to meet the necessary criteria for gob stowing. Work was also conducted on the development and testing of suitable equipment and mountings and in the sphere of measurement, monitoring and control.
