Properties and service performance : Feasibility study on the production of a seamless three-piece can from tin plate
This research project focuses on the possibilities of increasing the benefits of cost-effective wall ironing processes. A new can making concept has been developed which consists of one production stage to make a special container, from which more can bodies can be made later by cutting the original into several pieces. Dimensions of 73 x 58 mm and 66 x 58 mm for three-piece cans were investigated, focusing on the technological aspects of the production of the basic container. The standard packaging steel material used was Al-killed continuous cast steel with a tin coating. The research programme also involved the investigation of the mechanical performance of the containers made out of the separate parts of the basic container, as they might be used in the production process of can fillers.
