The first study concerned the chemistry of modern ettringite-based packing systems. A second study involved the replacement of one of the reactive species by another of similar size: replacement of the sulphate ion by the carbonate ion gave a relatively low strength carboaluminate pack. The next study examined the yield of the material so that a cheaper cementitious system could be used. Adaptation of the packing system for multipurpose use by altering the equipment or the water content was also considered, and successfully produced a sprayed cement, a cavity-fill foam and a low strength sealant. Finally the compressive strength test used to assess the behaviour of the pack in situ was replaced by a more appropriate creep test.
