The project established the causes and interrelated effects responsible for the breaking-up of extraction marks during rolling. Simulation calculations have shown that elimination of existing transverse corner cracks by way of deformation is almost impossible. However, it is possible to confine the damage by appropriate choice of the rolling strategy. The results of the simulation calculations have been confirmed to a large extent by the test results. Moreover, the marginal conditions for a possible calibration acting against the formation of transverse corner cracks have been worked out. Calculations according to finite element methods have shown that a calibration complying with these marginal conditions creates more favourable deformation conditions than the calibration in current use.
