Fatigue strength of multiplanar welded, unstiffened hollow section joints and reinforcement measures for in-plane and multiplanar joints in repair : Part VFunded under: ECSC-STEELRES 8C
This report relates specifically to work on multiplanar K-joints in circular hollow sections (CHS) and rectangular hollow sections (RHS) and includes design recommendations. The research investigates strain concentration factors and fatigue behaviour, and the effectiveness of repairing failed joints using three repair methods (box and plate reinforcements, combined gouging, and re-welding). Design lines are given for multiplanar K-joints, in relation to uniplanar joints. Because of the low stress gradient in multiplanar K-joints, stress concentration factors are low and a thickness correction is not necessary, in contrast to uniplanar joints, where thickness correction is necessary. Indications are also given for stress concentration factors and bending moments in multiplanar girders.
