This report covers the project on the development, construction and use of a shaft furnace for preheating and melting of scrap. The results achieved showed possible reductions in the consumption of electrical energy by 25 %, melting time by 30 % and electrode consumption by 26 % compared to a conventional electric arc furnace. Productivity was increased considerably. It was shown that it is possible to charge 115 tons of scrap during the first seven minutes of a charge course. Measurements of dioxin, amongst other elements in the exhaust gases from the melting furnaces, were performed, one of the main points being to compare the two furnaces with regard to the formation of dioxin based on the two different processes with and without preheating of scrap. The results indicated no significant difference between the shaft furnace and the conventional furnace.
