Instructions are provided for the use of the low alloy steel fracture samples for AES analysis. The instructions cover the background to the samples, the fracture and analysis in spectrometers used in either the direct or differential modes, and a method to calibrate the intensity scale for those which can be used in the direct mode. The samples may be used as a simple instrument calibrant for the amounts of segregation of P or Sn to the grain boundaries of low alloy steels or may, for those instruments used in the direct mode, be used also as an overall test of the system and its calibration.
