Abstract

The research into the parameters which control the response of a bridge under the passage of a vehicle is strongly based on experimentation. A hybrid empirical-analytical method is proposed in which the mathematical model of the bridge consists of its experimental modes, estimated by a modal test performed on points of the bridge deck. The method also requires information about the profile of the pavement and the behaviour of the vehicle. Once the global model is formulated, its solution can be obtained by a direct integration method as a central-difference algorithm. This paper includes the formulation of the general procedure and its application to a real bridge coupled with a non-linear vehicle. The measured deflections are compared with the numerical predictions.
