The way tokamaks work is briefly explained, after which the design and structure of TCV is presented. This machine, dedicated to the study of plasmas of elongated shape, is by nature unusual. The approaches taken in defining the specific and overall requirements of this electricity consumer, equipped with nineteen magnetically connected coils, are set out. These needs are explained in terms of local constraints such as the 50 Hz network of the EPFL and the space available for the equipment.
