The aim of the project was to demonstrate the operation of a 10 kW photovoltaic system. The installation works in stand-alone mode and feeds power to a small village. The rural stand-alone system "Los Arcos" is divided into the following subsystems: (i) photovoltaic generator: this contains 250 modules of the type BP 345, with square polycrystalline cells, mounted oriented towards the south and inclined at 60 ; (ii) storage systems: the system has a battery of 288 kWh that can support five full days of operation without sun; (iii) power-conditioning system: this employs both a regulator and inverters. In this installation, three inverters are used. They are connected in parallel to improve the overall efficiency of the system; (iv) data-acquisition system: this permits the monitoring of the system. This project has demonstrated that a 10 kW stand-alone photovoltaic system is a technically viable means of providing a power supply to a village. It has also demonstrated the low maintenance requirements of such systems.
