Comparison of waste toxicity index and repository performance assessment approaches to providing guidance for R&D on partitioning and transmutationFunded under: JRC-REACTSAFE 6C
Two approaches are available for evaluating the likely influence of postulated strategies on long-term disposal risks of high level radioactive waste in deep geological repositories: waste toxicity indices and repository performance assessments. The principal advantages of toxicity indices are their transparency for presentational purposes, their availability, and the stability of their conceptual bases. Against these advantages must be set two major disadvantages: that waste toxicity, as measured by a toxicity index, is not closely related to repository post-closure risks, and that these approaches deal only with octative risks. These disadvantages mean that it is not possible to use these results in decisions on the implementation of partitioning and transmutation. It is suggested that the two approaches are therefore complementary.
