This report describes the research work carried out and the results obtained while developing a reliable method of radio data transmission between a longwall shearing machine and the end of the face. The objective is to achieve bi-directional communications using a transparent, high integrity format with handshaking facilities so that active performance monitoring of the face machine is possible. Also the longer term aim is not only to monitor but also to control the machine remotely, with a view to increasing the availability and hence productivity. Various trials and experiments with radio technology, antenna design, modems and software configurations were carried out in order to select the optimum equipment.
