Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The information technology (IT) industry is of strategic importance to the economic and social development of the European Community. Not only does it promise to become the largest industry in the Community in terms of annual turnover by the year 2000, but information technologies continue to permeate throughout the fabric of European society and economy, to the extent that the development of this industrial sector will have a catalytic effect on employment and productivity throughout the Community as a whole. As the third phase of the ESPRIT programme approaches completion, the structure and objectives of the replacement programme are under negotiation. This report reviews the progress of the Community's IT research over recent years.
