Access to information and the speed, efficiency and user-friendliness of its distribution will be a key factor in the future competitiveness of European industry and in the social and cultural development of the Community as a whole. There is enormous potential for the expansion of electronic information services into the home, education establishments, health centres, and industry. Of these, multimedia technology is probably one of the most exciting developments in information processing technologies, providing the opportunity to combine textual information, image and sound on the same platform. Through interactive features, multimedia applications offer a new dimension to teaching and training which will bring benefits throughout the European Union.
