The overall aim of the BIOMED programme is to contribute to an improvement in the efficacy of medical and health research and development in the member states, in particular by better coordination of their respective R&D activities, pooling European resources and applying the results throughout the Community. The four areas of research action are: (i) prevention, care and health systems; (ii) major health problems and diseases of great socio-economic impact; (iii) human genome analysis; (iv) biomedical ethics. The report also includes seven case studies and a list of selected publications from the programme.
