Activities relating to heat exchanger technology in Europe are aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing the pollution caused by these processes. This presentation illustrates the energy saving role played by heat exchangers in industry, providing examples drawn from the EC's five JOULE programmes. The R&D projects being carried out within the framework of this programme relate to gas-gas, gas-liquid, gas-solid and liquid-liquid heat exchangers applied to high, medium and low temperatures. The Commission intends to pursue R&D activities in several areas which have been identified as important for industry, and increasingly this research will be taking environmental issues into consideration.
