Abstract

The objective of the Munvar project was to review and investigate the types of uncertainties encountered when modelling the possible future behaviour of prospective radioactive waste repositories, and to consider techniques for handling them. The main components of the report are: a review of the main issues relating to uncertainty in the radioactive waste management context, a description of the development and use of mass assignment theory for treating both fuzzy and probabilistic uncertainty in knowledge-based systems, the investigation of a knowledge-based system to act as an intelligent manual, the application of evidential support logic to site modelling studies, a review of novel management techniques for expert opinion, a description of a belief-function-based decision support system, and a description of the development and use of the knowledge-based system, SALUT.
